The words in the Purple Readers can be read once the children have been taught the 42 letter sounds, the 72 tricky words, the alternative vowel spellings taught in Step 2 – ‹y› as /ee/, the hop
over ‹e› digraphs, and the alternative vowel spellings found in words like day, seat, sky, night, snow,brown, few, boy, bird, turn, straw, August, and walk – and the remaining alternative spellings taught in Step 3, found in words like phone, nice, pencil, icy, huge, magic, energy, chair, bear and square. In addition, children are encouraged to read more challenging words using the rule:

If the short vowel doesn’t work, try the long vowel.
